Traveling with carry-on luggage only can be a liberating experience, especially for slow travelers who prefer to take their time and explore a destination in-depth. By packing light, you can save time and money by avoiding checked baggage fees, and you won’t have to worry about lugging heavy suitcases around crowded airports, train stations or cobble-stone streets. For me, its the energy-save that sells just taking carry-on luggage. Not only does packing and re-packing when moving from one destination to the next, take less time and energy, but so does picking out my outfits during my slow travel trip. Which brings us to – what exactly should you pack for a slow travel adventure with only a carry-on?
Here is a packing list that will help you pack smart and stay comfortable on your next slow travel trip to Europe.
Here are the MUST-HAVES I pack no matter the location for all of my slow travel adventures:
But before we get into it…Reminder: slow travel means spending a lot of time on your feet exploring the outdoors, so it’s essential to pack comfortable and practical clothing that can withstand a variety of activities and weather conditions.
- Comfy (& cute) walking shoes
- I start most, if not all, of my outfits from my toes on up and that same rule goes for packing. I like to pack my shoes first. And for all of you that are slightly germophobic like myself, these are the best shoe covers to pack with.
- 1-2 pairs of comfortable pants or leggings
- 1-2 pairs of shorts or skirts (depending on the weather and your preference)
- 4-5 tops (t-shirts, tank tops, blouses)
- 1-2 lightweight cardigans or sweaters (for layering)
- 1 lightweight jacket (depending on the weather)
- 1-2 dresses (optional)
- 1-2 swimsuits (if you’re going to a beach or pool)
- 1 pair of comfortable walking shoes
- 1 pair of sandals or flip flops
- 7 pairs of underwear
- 2-3 bras (including a sports bra)
- 1-2 pairs of socks
- 1 hat (for warmth or sun protection)
Toiletries When it comes to toiletries, less is more. Instead of packing full-size bottles, opt for travel-sized containers to save space. Consider packing the following:
- Travel-sized shampoo, conditioner, and body wash
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Deodorant
- Face wash and moisturizer
- Sunscreen and after-sun lotion (if you’re going to a sunny destination)
- Makeup (if you wear it)
- Feminine hygiene products (if applicable)
- Medications (if applicable)
Electronics While slow travelers may prefer to disconnect and enjoy their surroundings, it’s always good to have a few essential gadgets on hand. Consider packing the following:
- Phone charger
- Camera (if you plan to take pictures)
- Travel adapter (if necessary)
Miscellaneous Finally, there are a few miscellaneous items that can make your slow travel adventure more enjoyable. Consider packing the following:
- Travel-sized laundry detergent (so you can do laundry on the go)
- Reusable water bottle
- Small daypack or tote bag (for day trips or carrying essentials)
- Travel-sized umbrella (depending on the weather)
- Sunglasses
By packing light and smart, you can enjoy a slow travel adventure without the burden of heavy luggage. Remember to check your airline’s carry-on restrictions before packing to ensure that all your items fit within the size and weight limits. Safe travels!
